Expired domains are great for generating traffic and affiliate income as they frequently have traffic and PR. You do not need to do a lot of link building with expired domains as they would have some links pointing to them already.
Of course not all expired domains come with traffic and PR. Thus, before making a purchase, you need to check if the domain has PR, links, and traffic. There are numerous ways of checking if a domain has links, PR, and traffic. The most obvious would be to use services of web sites like iwebtool.com that would give you all information that is available for a domain.
Where to find expired domains? You can search for expired domains on tdnam.com, justdropped.com, or deleteddomains.com. Some expired domains can be bought for 5$ plus the one year domain registration fee (around 8$) while others are quite pricey. I recently tried to buy an expired PR5 domain with estimated 15,000 monthly visitors. I stopped bidding at 500$ and the domain was sold for 2,000 dollars.
Having said that, it is still possible to find gems for cheap. For example, I bought this oblife.com (PR3 with traffic) for 5$, altlife.com (PR2 with traffic) and some more PR3 and PR2 domains for only 5$. Now, you would say - why would I need so many domains? Well, you can always sell them for more than you paid for them. There are numerous places where you can sell the domains - forums.digitalpoint.com (buy and sell section), warriorforum.com/forum, and many others.
Be careful when you sell domains as there are lots of those who would love to get them for free. How? Very easy. Let’s say you sold a domain and got paid via PayPal. Once you got the payment, you transfered the domain to the new owner. And right after the domain got transfered the new owner makes a charge back… as a result you do not have the domain and you do not have the money. The registrar would not help you with getting the domain back and PayPal would not care about the transaction as it did not involve physical goods.
Also, be careful and do not tell anyone about the great domain you found before the transaction is complete and you actually have the domain in your account. There were cases when sellers of domains were contacted and offered better prices during the so called grace period - the period from the moment you paid for the domain do the moment it is actually transfered to you.
Good luck,
Nikolai
